Results of the Forum “Optics-2006”

The results of the second international Forum “Optics-2006” held in the All-Russian Exhibition Centre on 12-15 December 2006 reflect the growing prestige of the Forum, which was clearly evident in the increased number of participant countries and companies in comparison with the first Forum. This year's event was attended by 90 companies from Germany, Israel, Lithuania, the Republic of Belarus, Russia, the USA, Ukraine and Sweden.

The Program of the Forum
consisted of the specialized exhibition “Optics and optic-electronic devices and technology” and the conference “Optics – ÕÕI Century”. The exhibition covered 1,500 sq. m. of the exhibiting area and focused on electro-optical devices for industry and science, optical element base, optical technologies, laser equipment, holograms, photo detectors, observational optics, geodesic instruments, and many other of the latest achievements in the field of optics. More than 2 thousand people attended the exhibition during its four days of activity, the overwhelming majority of whom (90%) were professionals.

The second international Forum “Optics – 2006”
reflected current developments in the cutting edge optical and electro-optical devices and technologies and became another step in both the development of optical science and technology and the expansion of cooperation in similar fields. The Forum continued the tradition of professional meetings between the leading experts in the optical industry, bringing together renowned scientists, experts and leading companies from the field of optical and electro-optical engineering. Information and media support was provided by 15 newspapers and magazines.

The Forum was addressed by: B.S. Aleshin, Head of the Federal Industrial Agency of the Russian Federation; A. N. Chilingarov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation and Hero of the Soviet Union; F. P. Kovrigo, First Deputy Head of the Moscow Department of Science and Industry; V. N. Vasiliev, President of the D.S. Rozhdenstvensky Optical Society; and V. P. Savinykh, rector of MGUGiK (Moscow State University in Geodesy and Cartography), space pilot, double Hero of the Soviet Union and correspondent member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Particularly notable was the speech by Mr. Aleshin, in which he stated: “It is very positive that in the time following the first optical Forum a lot has been done to turn this event into a traditional annual exchange of opinions and experience by the professionals in the field of research, development and production of science intensive electro-optical products”.

One of the Forum's highlights was the international conference “Optics – 21 Century”, which was attended by more than 150 specialists. The conference mostly focused on the discussion of the current situation and the development prospects for optical and electro-optical engineering and technologies in the following fields:

  • Development trends in the optical materials technology.
  • Optical emission sources; Lasers and laser technologies in the 21 century.
  • Nano, integrated and fiber optics: current trends and development prospects.
  • Optical systems: improvement of calculation methods, design and manufacturing.
  • Optical receivers: current situation and development prospects.
  • Thermovision systems: current situation and development trends.
  • Tests, research and certification of the optical and electro-optical devices and systems.
  • Photonics in the 21st century.
  • Optics in medical science and biology.
51 reports were read at the conference, and they aroused intense interest amongst Forum participants in terms of the practical applications of the developments that were presented.

The results of the conference were summarized in a Resolution, which, in particular, stated: “The main reports presented at the conference reflect a growing number of research and development activities dedicated to the creation of multiband electro-optical systems, the improvement of optical technologies, the metrological aspects of current optical engineering and a number of other perspective trends”. At the same time it was pointed out that such fields as nano-optical elements and the application of optical technologies in medicine and biology had not been sufficiently represented at the conference.

According to the Organization and Program Committees of the Forum, made up of professionals from the optical industry, the Forum has become a significant event for all specialists and experts in the field of optics. The comprehensive program gave its participants the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the latest achievements in electro-optical engineering and high-end optical technologies and to establish useful business contacts.
